Cops Vs Kids

Cops vs Kids 2018 / SD’s Largest Birthday Party

It was a great honor for us at Simon Says Give – South Dakota, a local organization that is run by kids, for kids, to partner with Giving Hope. We have many initiatives that help kids in need, including the “Birthday in a Bag” program which provides kids in our area with all the things they would need to have a birthday party — cake mix, frosting, party invites and favors, utensils as well as gifts of fun and gifts of need. The goal was to raise money in order to bring a smile to as many kids as possible so they can, too, celebrate their birthday. Can you imagine not being able to celebrate your birthday?

Our team, which included members of our Adult Advisory Board, our Kid President, Nolan, as well as other kids from Kids Advisory Board met with Neil at Giving Hope to see how we could partner for our yearly Cops vs Kids event. We communicated our ideas and our vision and from there, it skyrocketed into what we called “South Dakota’s Largest Birthday Party.” We wanted to create something that was big, that would benefit as many kids as possible and from there on, we started planning and reaching out to everyone to ask for their time, talent, and treasure. We wanted to make it one big party for the entire community!

There was a lot of planning and behind the scenes work to make sure this event was a success.

Finally, on August 15, which coincidentally was Nolan’s 13th birthday, we held the 3rd Annual Cops vs. Kids / South Dakota’s Largest Birthday Party event at the Giving Hope facility. We had Backyard BBQ and Kettle Korn food trucks, hot dogs, ice cream, and other sweet treats to share with everyone. We also welcomed members of the Sioux Falls Police Department, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and the South Dakota Highway Patrol, who had a blast interacting with the kids, playing games with them and teaching them the cool tools they use to do their jobs every day.

Also, we had a number of classic games for everyone to participate in, which included a bouncy castle, potato sack races, ring tosses, pool full of rubber duckies for the youngest kids (and young at heart), and even a hula hoop contest with tons of prizes for all. We were able to fit in as much fun as possible outside before the rain swept in, but that couldn’t dampen our enthusiasm.

We had to take cover, but we had tons of fun things to do inside as well.

We had an amazing photo booth and props for everyone to use, courtesy of Pinnacle Productions, that made it all even more fun. The kids had a blast playing bingo, interacting with Wilbur (remember him from Gigglebees?) and were enthralled by the magic of Travis Nye.

In the end, and because of everyone’s generosity, Simon Says Give – South Dakota was able to raise over $4,000 in cash donations for their “Birthday in a Bag” program, and over $1,500 in in-kind donations. We couldn’t be prouder of how the event turned out! We are thankful that Giving Hope partnered with us and for their very generous donation. They helped make this event a rousing success. Next year, we hope to make it an even bigger event (and hope Mother Nature decides to cooperate).
